WHEN THE CALLOUT COMES IN, %%WE GO%%

Mehmet Huer shares the reality of his first live night-time operation with London Search and Rescue. From responding at a moment’s notice to navigating dark woodland and learning to trust their training, it’s a powerful reflection on stepping into the unknown - and why, even as a newer team member, every role matters.

"WHEN DARKNESS FALLS, YOUR TRAINING HAS TO SHINE"

I’d just got home from work and was ready to settle in when the call came in. A young woman had gone missing after a night out - and it was serious enough to deploy a team.

Within minutes, I’d grabbed my kit and was heading out the door. As a fairly new search technician, this would be my first live night-time deployment. I’d trained for this. I knew what to do. But training in controlled conditions doesn’t prepare you for the moment you step into a silent, pitch-black woodland, knowing someone’s life could depend on the work you do next.

Roles were assigned quickly and professionally. I was on the first search team. We headed out into the dark.

"THERE WAS A STRANGE PEACE IN THAT SOLITUDE - PURE FOCUS, NO DISTRACTIONS"

The woods were eerily still. You could hear every twig snap underfoot. The occasional rustle of wildlife or brief radio update was the only thing that broke the quiet.

In the dark, everything changes. Landmarks disappear. Hazards blend in. You move slower, feel for obstacles, and rely more on instinct and experience. For me, it was a test of composure. Of learning to work with my senses in a new way.

At one point, it felt like I was completely alone. But in that isolation, there was clarity. A pure kind of focus that I hadn’t expected. Then the update came: another team had found her. She was safe, sitting on a bench not far from where she’d last been seen. Relief flooded in.

That night reminded me why regular training matters, and how quickly it becomes real. I saw how trust, teamwork, and calm under pressure save lives. And I felt it: that moment where you realise you’re part of something bigger. Every call is a chance to help someone. And sometimes, you find a little more of yourself too.
