Our team is a dedicated group of highly trained professionals who combine expertise with compassion to search for the most vulnerable in our communities. Drawing on deep experience, we operate 24/7, remaining focused on our mission to bring people home.

MEET OUR TEAM

Our volunteers are people like you. They form the backbone of London Search and Rescue, from frontline Search Technicians to behind-the-scenes Support Services. Coming from diverse backgrounds, our volunteers bring a wealth of skills, compassion, and commitment to every role. Together, they support our mission to locate and assist vulnerable people across London.

Madison Smith
Search Technician

Madi is a Search Technician with a background in emergency management for the City of London, and previous volunteer experience in Australia and New Zealand. Originally from Perth, she brings a strong commitment to public service and practical resilience to every search. As a trained bike technician, she supports rapid coverage of large or challenging terrain, combining frontline action with strategic insight.

Steve McGowan
Search Manager and Founding Member

Steve is a Search Manager and one of the founders of London Search and Rescue. He brings nearly two decades of experience in Lowland Rescue. His career has been dedicated to frontline experience, shaped by 32 years as a military reservist and 22 years with Kent Police, now running his own international business. Steve is a former Training Officer with Kent Search and Rescue and has also served as a National Assessor.


Carla Barham
Water Search Lead

Carla is Water Search Lead and a qualified Medic, bringing extensive experience from her previous role as a police officer with the Marine Unit at Kent Police. Her background includes operational searches for missing persons and evidence across both land and water environments. A FREC4 medic, she specialises in swift water rescue, powerboat handling, and delivers accredited first aid training through her own security and medical training business..

Bhupinder Gill
Search Technician

Bhupinder is a Search Technician with a professional background in leadership and strategy across the public and third sectors. Grounded in the Sikh tradition of Seva, selfless service, he brings a disciplined, purpose-driven approach to every deployment, grounded in respect for those affected. He balances professional, family, and voluntary commitments and values the adaptability, teamwork and trust key to search operations.

Lisa Wills
Search Technician

Lisa is a Search Technician with a background in nursing and currently works as a Teaching Assistant supporting children with special needs. Her experience in both health and education gives her a strong foundation in empathy, resilience, and communication. Driven by a longstanding interest in search and rescue and a desire to give back, she brings valuable insight into neurodiversity, mental health, and working with vulnerable people.

Ewan Michael Riley
Team Photographer

Ewan is a photographer, videographer and video editor with experience across the arts, public and charity sectors. His work includes events, portraits and headshots, as well as video production for the NHS, local councils, universities and charities. As a video editor, he worked on Rory Pilgrim’s award-winning films The Undercurrent (Prix de Rome) and RAFTS (Turner Prize nominee), contributing to powerful, story-led projects with social impact.

Kyla Minato
Search Technician

Kyla is a Search Technician with the team and is working towards qualifying as a medic. She brings strong communication, outside-the-box thinking and perseverance to every search, shaped by a career in international logistics and experience supporting older adults. She is driven by a commitment to community safety, and values the team’s shared purpose and practical impact across London, helping those that have been reported missing.

Aniq Shillingford
Search Technician

Aniq is a Search Technician aspiring towards a career in the emergency services having spent time working in the rail network. He brings strong situational awareness, communication skills, and a calm approach to dynamic environments. With a background in cadet mentoring and a passion for public service, Aniq joined the team to make a meaningful difference. Resilient and thoughtful, he draws on lived experience to support others and values the inclusive, team-driven culture of search and rescue.

Humaira Ali
Search Technician and Grant Writer

Humaira is a Search Technician on the Foot Team and a qualified Drone Observer, assisting with ground searches, supporting aerial operations and helping with fundraising efforts. With a background in finance, she brings problem-solving, teamwork, and a positive, determined approach to everything she does. Driven by a desire to support vulnerable members of society, she values the team’s shared purpose and approaches every search with care and compassion, proud to be part of a team making a difference.

OUR SENIOR LEADERSHIP

Our senior leaders drive our emergency response at an operational level, implementing our strategy on the ground to deploy resources when required by our emergency services partners. With expertise spanning search and rescue, leadership, emergency planning, fundraising, communications, risk, finance and more, they ensure we are remain ready to search.

James Walker
Senior Leadership Team

James is a governance, risk and internal audit professional with extensive experience as a Trustee, Board Advisor and member of Risk and Audit Committees. He serves operationally as a Search Technician, Search Operations Manager, Medic and Team Leader with specialisms in Swiftwater Rescue and Paddlecraft Search. He is also a Trustee of the national charity Missing People, contributing strategic oversight to support families in crisis and improve outcomes for vulnerable individuals.

Daniel Burbeck
Senior Leadership Team

Daniel is a CIPFA-qualified accountant with over 15 years’ experience in finance roles across central government, including the Home Office and Cabinet Office. He serves on the Senior Leadership Team with responsibility for Finance. His expertise spans internal audit, business partnering, financial planning and leading statutory accounts production, with a strong focus on accountability, transparency and public service.

Anna Dean
Senior Leadership Team

Anna has broad experience in governance, crisis management and transformation across government, international and voluntary sectors. She serves as a Search Technician and Team Leader, specialising in Swiftwater Rescue and Paddlecraft Search. As a Trustee of ShelterBox, she supports emergency shelter and disaster response. Anna brings strengths in risk oversight, inclusive leadership and multi-agency collaboration, with a focus on values-led, human-centred impact.

Paul Wheeler
Search Manager and Paddlecraft Lead

Paul is a seasoned Project Manager with over 25 years of technical experience in the IT sector. He brings extensive expertise in strategic planning, complex logistics, and resource management to the team as a Search Manager. He serves operationally with diverse specialisms, including over 15 years of experience as a Mountain Leader. He is a Swiftwater Rescue Technician and Bank Search Trainer who also leads the Paddlecraft Search Team. His experience as a drone pilot and in bike search further ensures maximum efficiency by applying a broad operational and technical knowledge to resource deployment.

Al Hakan
Incident Commander

Al works in geospatial analysis for the public sector and freelances as an expedition leader and mountain leader. For the team, he leads on operations and the relationship with the emergency services. As an Incident Commander and Search Manager, he takes charge of missing person searches and is trained to a professional level to command volunteer Search and Rescue responders supporting major incidents. Al is also a Trustee with the Young Explorers’ Trust, a national charity dedicated to promoting safe and responsible expeditions for young people.

Ryan Farber
Search Manager and Clinical Lead

Ryan is a registered Paramedic currently working frontline in London Ambulance Service’s Fast Response Unit and Specialist Operations Response Team. He serves operationally as a Search Manager and Clinical Lead, delivering advanced care in high-risk environments and leading specialist training. A member of the College of Paramedics and Institute of Technical Rescue, he is also an ALS provider and holds certifications in anaesthetics, trauma and critical care, and search and rescue medicine. Ryan brings deep clinical expertise, calm leadership under pressure, and a commitment to evidence-based, patient-centred care.

OUR TRUSTEES

Our Board of Trustees provides strategic leadership, governance, and oversight for London Search and Rescue. With diverse expertise across search and rescue, law, the military, finance, education, and corporate governance, they ensure we remain accountable, mission-focused, and equipped to grow sustainably while supporting vulnerable people across London.

Sean McCarry OBE
Trustee

Sean is Chair of Lowland Rescue and founder of the Community Rescue Service in Northern Ireland. With over 45 years of Search and Rescue experience, he brings invaluable insight and national leadership to the team, helping shape our strategy and impact.

Paul Lewis MBE
Chair of Trustees

Paul is an experienced Lowland Rescue training lead with a 20-year background in Search and Rescue. A former military professional, he brings strategic insight, operational leadership, and a commitment to developing others in challenging, life-saving environments.

Steve Wood
Trustee

Steve has over 20 years of Search and Rescue experience with Mountain Rescue (England and Wales) and Lowland Rescue. A strategist and mapping specialist, he contributes governance, resource planning, and funding expertise.

Marie-Claire O'Hara
Trustee

Marie-Claire is a barrister and governance specialist. Her expertise in legal strategy and corporate governance strengthens our oversight, supporting our mission to help vulnerable people safely and ethically.

Chris Murphy
Trustee

Chris brings experience from roles at Nationwide, Goldman Sachs, and DZ Bank AG. His strengths in compliance, management, and strategy support our governance. Passionate about fitness and community, he helps drive sustainable growth and long-term impact.
